An illegal immigrant who had been released by local jail officials against a federal immigration hold and who also has a long history of deportations to Mexico, is now accused of raping one woman and assaulting another in a horrific crime spree.
Sergio Jose Martinez, 31, had been charged with 13 counts which include burglary, kidnapping, sex abuse, and sodomy in the knife-point attacks against two separate women on Monday in Portland.
It was only six months ago on December 7 that jail officials in Portland had Martinez in their custody. They had received a request from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency that asked the jail to notify ICE before he was released.
Due to Oregon’s “sanctuary state’ law prohibiting law enforcement from using any resources to enforce federal immigration law, he was released only a day later.
Beginning last Monday around 7 pm, Martinez reportedly broke into a home on a quiet residential street in the Sullivan’s Gulch neighborhood and went on to bound a 65-year-old woman living in the residence, rapping her before stealing her car.
The elderly woman was punched and her head was then slammed into the wooden floor, and then her phone, credit cards, and car were stolen.
Thankfully the woman got to a neighbor’s house and called 911.
Only hours later, police say Martinez made his way to a parking garage where he crouched in a dark corner until he saw a woman walking alone.
He had approached this woman, saying he wanted to ‘talk,’ but then pulled out a knife and forced the woman to walk to her car where he further assaulted her as she kicked him in the stomach and pressed the panic button on her remote.
People nearby heard her screams and ran to her aid which is when Martinez fled and was later found.
His extensive criminal history includes convictions for battery, theft, burglary, parole violations, and illegal entry into the US. He has been deported from the US more than 20 times.
Bail has been set at $2.36 million.
