A former Marine was arrested on Friday night after he opened fire on police officers in Kissimmee, Florida, killing one and critically wounding another.
Daily Mail reported that Everett Miller, 45, was arrested at a bar after he got into a fight Officer Matthew Baxter and Sgt. Sam Howard. Miller reportedly killed Baxter, 27, and seriously injured Howard, 36, in the shooting. Howard is listed in critical condition and doctors warn that he may not survive his injuries.
“It’s grave. Not much hope that he will survive this,” said Police Chief Jeff O’Dell.
Miller had recently involuntarily committed for a mental evaluation by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office and had threatened police on social media.
Baxter was patrolling a neighborhood with a long history of drug activity and was “checking out” three people including Miller when the shooting occurred. Howard responded as backup, but the officers didn’t have an opportunity to return fire.
Baxter had been with the Kissimmee Police Department and was married to a fellow officer. They are the parents to four children. Baxter has been with the department for ten years and is a married father of one.
“They are two wonderful men, family men,” O’Dell said. “They are two committed to doing it the right way.”
President Donald Trump immediately spoke out to pay tribute to the victims.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the
@KissimmeePolice and their loved ones. We are with you!” Trump wrote on Twitter.
