Democrats found themselves in trouble with the law on Thursday when several liberal protesters were arrested outside the office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington.
CNN reported that 11 people were arrested after demonstrations against Republican legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare. The protesters were trying to speak out against Senate Republicans’ health care bill, which was reintroduced on Thursday. McConnell has been trying to bridge the gap between conservatives and liberals so that the bill can pass.
“This is not a health care bill,” said Rev. Jennifer Butler of the liberal religious group Faith in Public Life. “It is a death bill. And we are here to urge life. We stand for life, not death.”
The demonstration at McConnell’s office was organized in part by Repairers of the Breach, a progressive faith organization run by the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, an activist and faith leader from North Carolina. Other religious groups participated in the protest as well, among them both Jews and Christians, who marched to the Capitol from the headquarters of The Friends Committee on National Legislation, a nonprofit political advocacy group that wants “to advance peace, justice, opportunity, and environmental stewardship.”
Rev. Dr. Traci Blackmon spoke out at the protest to slam McConnell, saying he has betrayed his own constituents.
“I happen to know that the people of Kentucky will suffer if this passes,” Blackmon said before addressing McConnell directly. “You will be okay, your friends will be okay, but the people who put you in office will suffer because of this bill.”
This came days after 80 liberals were arrested at the Capitol following another protest against the new healthcare bill.
We’re glad to see that these liberals are now in jail where they belong!
