Senate Minority Leader is undoubtedly feeling embarrassed today after a CSPAN microphone caught him giving an honest assessment of his relationship with President Donald Trump.
“He likes us. He likes me, anyway,” Schumer can be heard saying as CSPAN showed a wide shot of the Senate floor. Politico reported that though it’s not clear who Schumer was speaking of, this came a day after he and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced that they and the president had reached an agreement on a deal that would offer a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as minors in exchange for increased border security.
Trump’s White House and GOP lawmakers immediately pushed back on this claim, with House Speaker Paul Ryan telling reporters Thursday that “we have not begun negotiations” on a deal to protect the so-called Dreamers. However, Schumer seemed to stick to his story while speaking into the hot mic, saying, “look, what we said was exactly accurate.”
“Oh, it’s going to work out. And it’ll make us more productive too,” Schumer told his unseen conversation partner, going on to recount some of his conversation and negotiation with Trump the night before.
“Here’s what I told him: I said, ‘Mr. President, you’re much better off if you can sometimes step right and sometimes step left. If you have to step just in one direction, you’re boxed.’ He gets that,” Schumer said.
